Pilbara region heads for ammonia bunkering

Yara Clean Ammonia and Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly facilitate the use of clean ammonia as marine fuel in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

This collaboration illustrates the confidence and commitment of both organizations in ammonia as the primary zero-carbon fuel for the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

The objective of the agreement is to jointly assess potential ammonia demand and required storage infrastructure, leveraging Yara Pilbara’s existing global ammonia production facility and its clean ammonia potential in the region.

The agreement will also ensure the safety of ammonia bunkering operations in PPA ports through collaborative safety analysis and the creation of transparent ammonia bunkering guidelines.

Both organizations agree that forming a clear understanding of required bunker infrastructure and ammonia safety guidelines will accelerate the effective adoption of clean ammonia as a fuel and be a major step towards the elimination of fossil fuels.

“The potential of ammonia as a fuel to effectively decarbonize the maritime industry is very clear; however, some questions remain about how to maximize the safe and efficient delivery of fuel in a port environment. This collaboration with PPA aims to answer these questions and, therefore, will quickly help track ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel in the region.” says Murali Srinivasan, SVP and Commercial Manager of Yara Clean Ammonia.

PPA CEO Roger Johnston said that as the world’s largest bulk export port authority, PPA has a strong commitment to safe operations and sustainable shipping.

“PPA strives to be a forerunner in establishing frameworks to ensure the safety of ammonia storage operations. This collaboration with Yara Clean Ammonia creates great opportunities to work together to reduce carbon emissions,” Johnston said.

The joint evaluation is expected to last approximately one year.
