Housing Trust gains international recognition for its Secure Home program

The Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) has won international accolades for its groundbreaking Secure Home program.

QLCHT’s Secure Home program has won the Leading Innovation Award at the Australasian Housing Institute’s annual Brighter Future Awards. Awards are presented by community housing providers from across New Zealand and Australia.

The award recognizes new thinking in the housing sector for initiatives or projects that have led to significant change in an organization, with lessons that can then be applied more broadly to other housing organizations.

QLCHT President Richard Thomas says the Trust is delighted to win the award, adding that the recognition is a tribute to QLCHT’s years of innovation.

“Along with a number of other organizations across the country now lining up to use our Secure Home program, we are incredibly proud to have innovated here and honored to receive such recognition,” said Thomas.

The first of its kind in New Zealand, Secure Home is a scheme where people buy properties through a 100-year ground lease, with the trust retaining ownership of the land in perpetuity.
